How Long Can Gasoline Be Stored?

Gasoline-will not remain fresh for extended periods of time without the use of proper additives. These additives can extend the life of your fuel for up to 12 months. Gasoline is a carbon-based petrochemical. If left for a long period of time, the gasoline will begin to oxidize, causing hydrocarbons to react with oxygen in the tank. This creates deposits that can damage fuel lines, carburetors, and other system components. Therefore, storage for longer than 30 days requires additives, specifically fuel stabilizers. Such additives are recommended for storage of classic cars and all other vehicles or pieces of equipment that are not used frequently. Remember to always keep all fuel tanks full for long-term and seasonal storage, as a full tank helps prevent condensation. Bare interior tank walls will create a condition of condensation as there is air in the tank and water in the air.

Use STA-BIL® Fuel Stabilizer for all gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment stored for 30 days or more. The additives in the fuel stabilizer will keep fuel fresh for up to 12 months and arespecifically designed for fuel storage. The stabilizer prevents fuel from “gumming up,” and protects against corrosion, varnish formation, and can help against phase-separation (separation of fuel from ethanol). STA-BIL® Fuel Stabilizer may alsobe used to store ethanol-blended fuel, up to E-85. If seeking additional protection from ethanol-blended fuels, theuse of STA-BIL® Ethanol Treatment is recommended. Both products may be used in conjunction without risk of damage. The Ethanol Treatment provides additional protection against corrosion, gum/varnish formation, and contains a very powerful fuel system cleaner. It is essential to keep fuel systems clean and particle-free, i.e. “good housekeeping.” Storing fuel and equipment in dry storage conditions are important. This prevents vehicles from being exposed to high humidity, which can result in rust. As previously mentioned, it also helps prevent too much water in the fuel tank, which results in condensation in the fuel tank and the rest of the vehicle. Use 1 ounce of STA-BIL® Fuel Stabilizer per 2 ½ gallons of gasoline, ethanol blends, and 2-cycle gasoline/oil blends for storage up to 12 months. STA-BIL® Ethanol Treatment is recommended during every fill-up when using ethanol-blended fuels.
