Radiators perform a vital function, helping to cool a vehicle’s engine and keeping the operating temperature at a safe level. However, no radiator can perform its job effectively without proper coolant levels. While this normally isn’t a problem, even a small leak can cause a radiator to lose enough coolant that it can no longer work as intended. Fortunately, minor leaks can be repaired quickly and effectively.
Identify the Leak
The first step in repairing a leak is to identify where the problem is located. Begin by carefully wiping down the radiator and cleaning the entire surface. Start the vehicle and let it run briefly, then turn the engine off and let it cool. Inspect the radiator closely, looking for a small wet spot or signs of corrosion. If the leak appears to be minor, proceed with the next step. If the leak is more significant or there is visible damage, however, it may require repair from a professional mechanic.
Seal It Up
Small coolant leaks are more of a nuisance than a major problem, and they can be repaired in several ways. The easiest and most effective way to fix a minor leak is by using an AlumAseal Radiator Stop Leak product.
Beginning with a cool engine, remove the radiator cap and pour in the AlumAseal according to the directions on the label. Replace the radiator cap and drive the vehicle for at least 20 minutes to allow the AlumAseal to circulate throughout the radiator.
