Harry Unruh is a 70 year-old, self-professed car nut who first fell in love with Cougars when he bought his first Cougar in early 1967. He ended up trading it in for the 1969 Eliminator on August 1, 1969. He has been a “gearhead” all his life and still does almost all of his own car maintenance. Harry had a career at IBM for 27 years before retiring at age 49 but he still works part-time as a consultant in the ERP software industry. He has been married for over 46 years and has two daughters and four granddaughters.
Harry first heard about Cool Rides Online from a common friend on Facebook who sent him a link to the site. His “Cool Ride” is the 1969 Eliminator but he also owns a 2011 VW Golf TDI Sportwagen and a 2003 Chevy Silverado 2500HD Duramax/Allison pickup. If money was not an issue, Harry’s dream car would either be an original 1965 Mustang Shelby Cobra GT 350 or a 2016 Mercedes AMG GT S.
The Cougar Eliminator is special to Harry because it is the car that he originally purchased in 1969, sold in 1974, and re-purchased in 2009 – almost 40 years after his original purchase. Out of about 25 cars that he’s owned, the Eliminator is the one that he regrets selling most. He was sure that he’d never be able to have one again (it was totaled about 2 months after he sold it in ’74). The most difficult part of the restoration process was keeping the car as original as possible.
Right now, Harry doesn’t have any big plans for his Cool Ride because it’s tucked away in his garage for the winter. However, he is looking forward to next year’s car shows and good weather cruisin’. His favorite memory with his Eliminator is pushing its speed to 130+ mph!!
His three tips for taking care of his Cool Ride are: keep it clean and polished, keep it out of the rain, and make sure all little bugs are taken care of promptly. You can read Harry’s full story and see more photos of his restoration process at http://harrya.webs.com
