Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am an IT teacher. I love golf, I used to windsurf, and I was trained to race a car on the track. I say this because I really want to get back to the track. I have had Sunbeam Alpines for over 25 years. I bought my first Series V just after University.
How did you first get interested in this hobby/passion?
At about the time I bought my first car I was looking into some sort of convertible. I had a friend with a TR7, another with a Spitfire, and it goes on with an MG and an Alfa Romeo. I thought about an MG Midget but fell for the Sunbeam Alpine. It turns out as a kid we (kids) rode in the back of my father’s Series I Alpine. So buying one for me seemed like a good tradition.
What Rides do you currently own?
Out in the barn I keep my third every Sunbeam Alpine Series V. It runs well but is rusting badly. The first Alpine I owned was T-boned. It was a late model series V with the Chrysler Emblem on the front right fender. The second Alpine I bought too soon after the accident and had no time to fix it up right, so I moved it on. The third was a barn find and oddly enough had the bumperettes off my first as I was selling parts from the wreck. The fourth was a series IV which I moved on as well. Five and six are my current gems. There is a 1962 with every option that these cars could have had on it. The other is a Series III from 1964. This one has a Holbay engine and is modified for the track. Through this car I’ll get back to the track.
What do you like most about your Cool Rides?
Finding a site that cares about the nice cars is tough. I don’t just want the pictures but it’s important to find a like-minded community to share ideas and solve car problems.
What is the best memory you have with your favorite ride?
I rolled up to my then girlfriend and now wife’s house with the top down. She was so happy to get in the car even though it was Christmas and snowing out.
How do you store your ride(s) during infrequent use, and what maintenance tips can you provide for readers?
My cars infrequently see the rain. For the most part I am unsure if the soft tops actually go up. Therefore they are stored most of Fall, all of Winter and most of Spring. Because I start them and move them around once a month or so they are not stuck in long term storage mode. But keep this in mind – the mice get at them. I found a tip that for the most part works. Keep bars of Irish Spring soap around and inside the car. The mice stay away.
What was the first car you ever owned?
My first car was a 1974, green, 4-door Mercury Comet. By the time I sold it the rear bumper brackets were rusted out so badly I would have to pull up on the bumper to keep it from pointing at the ground.
What is/was the BEST car ever made?
I am partial to the E-Type Jaguar. I think it’s even high on Jeremy Clarkson’s list.
What is/was the WORST car ever made?
Personally I dislike the old Volkswagen Beetles. Kerosene heaters and using the air pressure from the spare tire for the windshield washer. How does this make any sense? I also found these cars top heavy which was proved nicely when, as a passenger, I found myself in a roll-over single car accident.
How did you first hear about the Cool Rides Online website?
I found it through the stumble-upon app. I set my preferences to classic cars and Cool Rides popped up regularly. I was hooked.
Is there anything else you’d like the Cool Rides Online members to know about you?
One day I’ll have the full set of Alpines and maybe a Tiger too.
