The weekend of January 15-17 I traveled to Lanexa, VA to attend the annual Freeze Out event hosted by Free Bird Vanners. It may be held during the winter in a campground but it is warmed by the friendship and camaraderie of all those in attendance. There were attendees from PA, NJ, MD, VA, NC, SC, GA, etc. This event is hosted within a campground during the winter. Most events during the winter are held indoors due to weather or hall parties. Free Bird dares to be different and they always entertain and never disappoint.
I arrived on Thursday night to make sure I had a spot close to the building. I do not take my van to this event; I take my RV as the January weather can be too unpredictable to drive the van 300 miles one way. I met some close friends there and helped set up.
Friday was when most people arrived. Some stayed in cabins, campers and their vans. Approximately 40 vans/trucks showed up this year. This did not include the hosts. Friday evening they had Van Hot Wheels drag races and Saturday came the van show. There were 12 vans in the show including the RC van I put in because I did not want to pull my RV out to enter.
There was a van in the show that has not been seen for probably 15 years as it had been in storage. The owner passed and it was willed to the current owner. They are planning on bringing it back to its former glory. The van is a 1974 Dodge van called Locomotion. It is presently a shared ownership between a father and daughter. The van and its story are cool so I decided to give the van the Cool Rides Sponsors award to Dakota Thorne of Pottstown, PA.
The awards were handed out for the various games and the van show. There was a pot luck for everyone and the variety of food was wonderful. Vanners are like family and they make sure you do not go hungry. Just like the group I camped with from Twilight Truckers. Every time I turned around I was asked if I was hungry. This event is a must attend and I make every effort to do so every year. The club, Free Bird Vanners is going to have a new event in April this year called Spring Forward. I will need to check this one out as well.
