The Dodge Dart has a solid reputation as one of the finest small cars to ever hit the market. Introduced in 1960, this car replaced Plymouth as the compact offering at the Dodge dealerships as the Plymouth brand moved onto its own lots. Originally introduced as a reduced full-sized sedan, the Dart was shortened by 1963, and would go on to eventually sell 3.7 million units over its initial 16-year run.
Dodge has been in the habit over the past few years of bringing back models from the heyday of the American auto industry in the 60s and 70s. This has been a good tactic for the brand, as the company has seen moderate sales success with its revamped Charger and Challenger lines, helping the Dodge name return to the good graces of motoring enthusiasts.
Dodge is bringing back the Dart mark in an attempt to return to the compact sedan market with a car that appeals not only to budget-conscious soccer moms, but also drivers who crave a little elevated performance in their day-to-day commute.
One thing Dodge has consistently been able to do right is create a solid compact car that appeals to the masses. The Neon, which was sold under the Dodge, Chrysler and Plymouth badge at various times between 1994 to 2005 was one of the companies greatest success stories. Not only was this model a home-run in terms of functionality and sales, but it even had a performance variant, the SR/T 4, which held its own against import competition.
So far the buzz about the new car has been good, as it has earned a top crash-test rating from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety. As well, one of the three engine options available on this lightweight model is similar to the 160 mph four-cylinder block found in the Fiat Abarth.
