Continental Racing Takes 1-2 B-Spec Class Finish at Autobahn

The pair of Continental Racing Mazda2 B-Spec racers performed flawlessly in their initial outing of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) season, finishing in the top two positions in their class. In his first official race in the class, team owner Joel Weinberger piloted the #10 Castrol Mazda2 to a slim margin of victory over his teammate Shawn Young, driver of the #11 STA-BIL Mazda2.

Weinberger stated “Fortunately, we were able to do some pre-race testing last week, because the #10 developed a problem with the power steering during our test laps. We got it fixed a couple days before the race, and it was fun to have such a great battle with Shawn. The strength of these cars is the ability to carry way more speed through the corners than you would think is possible.”

After the single qualifying session, Weinberger started the race from the 9th position overall, 1st in class. Young started from the 11th position overall, 2nd in class. The B-Spec cars were grouped in with other classes of production-based cars, including Mazda RX-7’s and MX-5 Miatas. Once the green flag flew, the two Continental Racing teammates demonstrated why the new B-Spec racing class provides great bang for the racing buck. Swapping the lead at least six times during their 22-lap battle, Weinberger and Young made it a great show for the spectators and corner workers to watch. While battling each other for position, they also carved their way through some of the other group competitors, ultimately improving their overall finishing positions to 6th and 7th.

Young commented, “It was a great way to kick off our season. We’re really pleased to have STA-BIL and Castrol on board as sponsors this year. Together with BFGoodrich, these partners help us with the resources necessary to compete at the front. We’re looking forward to making steady improvements at our upcoming events.”

Continental Racing’s quest for a national championship continues at the Chicago Region SCCA June Sprints, held at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin on the weekend of June 14-16th. You can find and follow the “Continental Racing” team on Facebook.
