I made the trip to Shenandoah Acres Family Campground in Stuarts Draft, VA the weekend of April 8-10. This was Free Bird van club’s new event. They have hosted Freeze Out in January for many years and they elected to try this inaugural event in the Spring. Thoughts of warmer temperatures were on their mind. If only mother nature had cooperated. I arrived on Friday afternoon and worked on setting up camp. The wind had other thoughts. I elected to not even attempt to set up the CRO/GE canopy. It would have been scrap metal if I had. The temperature did not improve much for this weekend compared to January unfortunately as the high for the weekend ended up being the low 40’s.
Friday night were the Hot Wheels van races which are always a good time. I had brought along my portable PA system and was able to provide music for the attendees who were in the building.
Saturday brought the van show. There were 20 vans entered with a nice selection of Chevys, Dodges, Ford’s, Toyotas, and Nissans. There were attendees from as far south as Florida and far north as New York. This was their first event and they had 65 vans and trucks on hand. This included host club and attendees. There was a nice turn out and the grounds and campground owners were great too. There were various games as well for participants. It was necessary to hold the games indoors due to the temperatures and winds. There were wind gusts exceeding 40mph at times. People were thankful for the building.
The awards were handed out for the van show and games. The Best of Show award went to Gary Hersham with his custom Dodge Van. I had presented him with the Flying Eagle Award last year at the Van Nationals. I presented the CRO Sponsors Award to Ricky Graves and Patti Butler for their 1978 Ford Econoline Dragon Slayer. I presented it for their van as well as their dedication to this event. They promoted it so well to make it the success that it was. Kudos to them and to all of Free Bird for a successful first event for the Spring. I am sure they will be Springing Forward into 2017 for Spring Forward 2.
If you are in the Stuarts Draft, VA next April you should check it out.
