Now, it seems, there's evidence that more Americans are falling back in love with new trucks, SUVs and off-road vehicles.
According to an April report by the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), experts are predicting this year's rise in auto sales will be propelled by strong numbers from models from these designs, particularly the light-truck category, which includes the popular Ford F-Series and Chevy Silverado. This follows similar increases in these categories in 2011, one some sceptics indicated may have been due to their declining prices and high availability, particularly in the case of used SUVs.
In addition, SEMA says that its own research supports the notion that Americans are more interested in trucks and SUVs than in recent years. According to the organization's data from its 2011 SEMA show, 20 percent more attendees registered and expressed an interest in buying a van, SUV or truck than in the previous year.
Similarly, the show also saw a rise in the number of booths promoting accessories and specialty parts for these vehicles. In total, there were 5 percent more of these companies present at the shows in 2011 than in 2010, SEMA says.
